Andrew O. Mathews
Andy Mathews focuses his practice on construction law, including the representation of developers, owners, contractors and sub-contractors in contract negotiations, prosecuting and defending mechanic’s liens, dispute resolution and litigation. Andy works in all phases of construction, from pre-bid/development through close-out.
In addition to construction law, Andy also regularly handles complex commercial litigation matters, including landlord/tenant issues, contract disputes and other commercial law. He has also represented businesses and individuals in government and corporate investigations in matters involving securities and banking regulation, the Lacey Act and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
He is a member of the Virginia Bar Association and the Richmond Bar Association. Andy is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Andy has been listed in Virginia Super Lawyers Rising Stars (2012-2018). In addition, Virginia Business magazine has named him among Virginia's "Legal Elite" (2015).
Andy received his Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Richmond School of Law. While in law school, he was a member of the University of Richmond Law Review. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest University.

- Drafted construction contracts for a $50 million+ mixed-use development.
- Represented national contractor in claims against plumbing subcontractor for defective work in construction of nursing home.
- Represented developer in litigation against contractor and subcontractor for defective work on apartment building.
- Tried a case seeking an easement by necessity for timber company across adjacent property. The trial court granted the easement, and the court’s decision was upheld by the Virginia Supreme Court.
- Sought summary judgment on behalf of flooring manufacturer/importer for claims of tortious interference, conspiracy, and breach of contract made by supplier, which the court granted.
- Defended numerous mechanic’s liens on behalf of solar developer.
