Drew graduated with distinction from the University of Virginia in 1977 and received his law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1981, where he was an associate editor of the University of Richmond Law Review and on the Moot Court Board. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America® (2011-present), Virginia’s Top Lawyers and Virginia Super Lawyers (2012-present), and he was named Best Lawyers® Richmond Personal Injury Litigation "Lawyer of the Year" (2012, 2022). He was admitted to practice in 1981 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia. Drew clerked for the Honorable Richard B. Kellam, Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia, from 1981 to 1982.
